History

Madoc was originally settled as MacKenzie's Mills around 1832 by Donald MacKenzie and later renamed after the legendary Welsh prince Madoc ap Owain Gwynedd. It became a key mid-way stop on the stagecoach route between Toronto and Ottawa, and in 1854 saw further development with the completion of the Hastings Colonization Road. The region gained prominence after Ontario’s first gold rush in 1866 near Eldorado, sparking mining activity that shaped its early economy. Madoc was incorporated as a village in 1877, later amalgamated into Centre Hastings in 1998.
