Centre Hastings Real Estate

History

Madoc was originally settled as MacKenzie's Mills around 1832 by Donald MacKenzie and later renamed after the legendary Welsh prince Madoc ap Owain Gwynedd. It became a key mid-way stop on the stagecoach route between Toronto and Ottawa, and in 1854 saw further development with the completion of the Hastings Colonization Road. The region gained prominence after Ontario’s first gold rush in 1866 near Eldorado, sparking mining activity that shaped its early economy. Madoc was incorporated as a village in 1877, later amalgamated into Centre Hastings in 1998.

Things to Do

Madoc offers a variety of outdoor, cultural, and community experiences. O'Hara Mill Homestead & Conservation Area features a restored water-powered sawmill and trails along the Moira River. The Madoc Skatepark and outdoor splashpad are regionally popular. Golf enthusiasts can play at West Highland Golf Course . History buffs will enjoy heritage walking in the downtown area, including the Village Square Market and historic architecture. You can also boat, fish, or picnic by Moira Lake, and explore local trails for hiking, snowmobiling, or cross-country skiing

Local Restaurants

Madoc’s dining scene blends cozy bakeries, casual diners, and local breweries. Hidden Goldmine Bakery serves award‑winning butter tarts, sandwiches, and coffee in a historic Main Street storefront. Finn's Pub offers a variety of pub fare, and Firehall Food which is a great additional option for pub food. Seasonal pop-up markets like the Village Square Market showcase local artisans, produce, honey, and preserves .

What It's Like Living There

Madoc offers a friendly, small‑town lifestyle where cost of living and housing are notably lower than in nearby urban centres like Belleville or Kingston. The community is tight-knit, proud of its history, and supports local businesses and events—from the annual Santa Claus Drive‑Thru parade to summer Heritage Day at O’Hara Mill. Education is served by Centre Hastings Board of Education (K‑12), and healthcare is available through the local medical centre with access to nearby hospitals. Outdoor access is abundant: lakes, trails, golf, skating, and snowmobiling right at your doorstep. While daily travel by car is needed, the slower pace, strong community bonds, and natural surroundings make Madoc an appealing choice for families, retirees, and those seeking a quiet rural lifestyle.
